Let me explain what’s happening in the Supreme Court right now. It’s very important for a very prevelant and a very sensitive topic for this country - judicial corruption.

Yesterday, Justice Chelameswar ordered setting up of a 5-judge bench EXCLUDING the Chief Justice of India to probe allegations of bribes being paid to allegedly influence outcome of cases in the top court.

At 3 pm today, the Chief Justice of India Justice Dipak Mishra urgently constituted a SEVEN judge bench to review the decision of Justice Chelameswar ordering probe yesterday.

This seven judge bench was constituted by the CJI without Justice Chelameswar himself who is currently the senior-most judge after the CJI in the Supreme Court.

Two of the judges - Justice Sikri and Justice Bhushan recused themselves from the bench. Now a bench of 5-judges constituted by the CJI is in the process of reviewing Justice Chelameswar’s order.

It’s quite clearly a battle of egos amongst the top two judges of the apex court of the country with the spotlight on the CJI who has decided to hear the case of corruption charges against him, himself!

In the 19th century Lord Acton said “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”; In 2017, the Supreme Court has undoubtedly proven it.
